When foreign-made miniature cars were at the height of popularity in Japan back in late 60’s, customers asked for the Japanese cars, and toy company Tomy had a desire to see Japanese children playing with more familiar Japanese miniature cars. In 1970, Tomy released Japan’s first die-cast Japanese miniature car series that fit in the palm of a child’s hand. The series name as Tomica, which mean TOmy MIni CAr. The initial run of Tomica cars was all-Japanese: a Datsun Bluebird SSS, a Datsun Fairlady Z432, two Toyota Crowns, a Toyota Corona, and a Toyota 2000GT. Up to now, there are more than 1,020 different types of cars, a total of more than 655 million cars (As at April 2019). In recent years, in addition to their long-standing products, Tomica have expanded their lineup such as “Dream TOMICA” Series that collaborates with characters , “Tomica Limited” as well as later “TOMICA Premium” Series of highly detailed collection models. In addition, in 2004, Tomica launched a true 1/64th scales highly detailed models for adults. This series name as Tomica Limited Vintage (TLV) and Tomica Limited Vintage Neo (TLVN). TLV will cover car model before 1980 and TLVN will cover car model after 1980. In 2020 Tomica will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Tomica’s sales launch.
